Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd, one of the world´s leading electronics manufacturers and best known for its Panasonic brand name, has been recognised as a pioneer in UMTS, the third generation mobile telephone standard in Europe. On Monday 18th March, at the CeBIT fair in Hannover, Germany, during a panel discussion with Erkki Liikinen, EU Telecommunications Commissioner, the company received the ´UMTS Application Award´ from Dr. Susanne Knorre, Economic Affairs Minister for Lower Saxony, Germany.
The award was presented to the European Technology Center of Matsushita Electronic Components (Europe) in Lüneburg, Germany for the development of a concrete application for mobile business people who want to avoid carrying a laptop PC, but want to have access to large data files when travelling´.
The award winning application is a module that enables large data files, such as videos or presentations to be downloaded at high speed from the Internet via a 3G mobile phone direct to a projector. Thus, the latest information is available.
The Panasonic Engineers at Matsushita Electronic Components (Europe) are confident that such a module can be ready for market in one or two years, in line with the expected availability of UMTS services across Europe. In addition, they are also working on similar concepts for automotive navigation and telematics applications.
The contest for the ´UMTS Application Award´ began in December 2001. Minister Dr. Knorre commented on the initiative by her government: ´A UMTS mobile will be more than a trendy phone or a portable organiser. The success of UMTS will be defined mainly by the available applications.
With this module, Panasonic has supplied an important contribution to the development of future 3G applications and received one of the two main ´UMTS Application Awards´, with a prize sum of Euro 16.000.
